This year international day was the best international day I had experienced. I had a feeling that it’s going to be special when my homeroom teacher said that we have to wear shorts for some activities. On the next day, we had special guesses from the Cross Roads. DJ, a member of the Cross Road gave a great and hilarious speech about how he helped the people in poverty and how we can help them in front of all middle and high school students. The day is name: “A day at the world shoes”. During that day, we do many activities that DJ says will give us the experience of how is it like to live in poverty. I really learned a lot on that day. I will tell you more about the activities and what I’ve learn from it, also how can I help the people in poverty.
DJ’s great speech shows us that these people need help and he said we can help these people from all age, not just adult. You could feel how difficult are the lives of people in poverty through DJ’s speech. And after the speech, we did many activities to experience how it is like to live in poverty. The first activity is the paper bag activity. We have to make paper bags and sell it the shopkeepers to earn money for living. I learn that these people have a lot pressure to make the paper bags and sell it in order to pay the tax, medical fee and their dream of their children to go to school. After the paper bag activity, we have lunch. The lunch was very simple. I think it is similar to what people eat in poverty. Rice with potato and carrot… After lunch, we went to a small meeting in the gym. The meeting introduces us to our school project; we are building a school in Dong Nai. We are raising $60,000 to build the school. After the meeting, we follow the high school students to do the leadership activities, where we have to help each other to cross the bridge. I think through this activity, you have to work together to survive better. But also it’s very competitive too. You have to win to survive. If you give up, you will die so there is a lot of pressure. And the last activity of the day is with the global issues group. They talked about stereotype, how much percent of the world live with less than $1 per day, with more than $2 per day, with an average income, and the wealthy group. I realized that the percentage is getting better every year but there is still work to do.
It was a very busy and fun day. I learned how to help the people and what is it like to live like one of them. I really feel lucky and I realize I can help them in a lot of ways. We are building a school which a brilliant plan but that is just a school project. I think I could help the people even more like sending things we don’t use and send it to them. It might not be useful for us but it might be very useful for others. When I grow up and have a good running business, I would cooperate with the Cross Roads and send 25% of the company income to the Cross Roads to help the people in poverty.
